Painting

At the heart of Open Door Studio is the painting of Elz and Schoon-Tanis.
Painting is a daily activity in the studio, and the results are always changing and available for purchase. The door, as you might guess, is open (well, closed for climate control, but unlocked… knock and come in).

Barry Elz Artist Statement

I have always been intrigued by the opportunity to interpret a moment of creation. Painting an inspirational memory of what God has generously placed in plain view using a contemporary stylized approach to traditional impressionism. Painting is my natural course and fulfillment.

Joel Schoon-Tanis Artist Statement

I strive to view the world through a child-like lens — full of color, whimsey and honesty. To accomplish this, I often juxtapose kid-like drawings with “realistic” paintings while adding a few written lines of “kid-thought”. I try to paint loosely and full of energy. Oh, and I like to paint animals and Bible stories.

Commissions

Joel welcomes commission work, and especially loves mural projects for schools and churches and involve huge groups of kids. Find out about working with Joel.
